Quotation
mirifica deinde procuratione abiectissimum negotium pro amplissimo ornamento expetendum Thebis reddidit.
Part of Speech
Type of Thing Ornamented
Object/ Person Ornamented
The man laying the pavement/ possibly in a punning reference, the city of Thebes
Type of Medium Ornamenting
Medium/a Ornamenting
A most spendid honour
but also possibly an implicit punning idea on the idea of the work being undertaken "for the sake of" the pavement as a "far-spreading ornament" (as "amplissimus" conveys both "most splendid" and "widest"). This works particularly well if "operam … speciosissimum" in the previous line is also understood to imply a reference to the finished product of the paving as a "most splendid/beautiful work" rather than the much less usual "most honourable" undertaking, which translators prefer.
Notes
*Where I previously framed this as a simpler reference to the paving, I have subsequently accepted that this is not the case. (cp. Barham, 2018; Barham, 2015)
