ἂν τοῦτο ἑστηκὸς ᾖ, Ῥόδος ἕστηκε τοῖς ὀρθῶς ὁρῶσιν, ἐπεὶ καὶ αὐτὰ τὰ τείχη καὶ τὰ νεώρια καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους κόσμους τοὺς μετὰ τούτων φρόνημα ἄνδρες ἔχοντες ἐκτήσαντο καὶ λογισμοὺς οἵους χρὴ περὶ πραγμάτων, καὶ ἦν ταῦτα ἀναθήματα τῆς ἐκείνων τῶν ἀνδρῶν γνώμης, οἳ ζήλου καὶ τῆς ἐπὶ τοῖς καλοῖς φιλοτιμίας ἕνεκα πάντας μὲν πόνους ᾠήθησαν, πάντας δὲ κινδύνους ὑποστῆναι δεῖν, ἐξ ὧν ἔπλευσαν μὲν ἅπασαν ὅση πλόϊμος θάλατταν, ἠγωνίσαντο δὲ καὶ καθ᾽ αὑτοὺς καὶ ἐν συμμαχίαις πολλοὺς καὶ μεγάλους καὶ ἐνδόξους ἀγῶνας:
